Andrei Timofte (born 1988, Bucharest) lives and works as an artist, designer and teaching lecturer in Iasi, Romania. He has a doctorate degree in visual arts, at the “Faculty of Fine Arts and Design”, “George Enescu” National University of Arts, Iasi, where he developed a theoretical thesis and an artistic research project on the topic of The Social Factory of Desire: Work and Cultural Memory of the Creative Industries after the 90s. Since 2010 he has been an active member of the SATellite group (Social Artistic Tendency) and he recently joined Satelit – a cultural production NGO. In 2020 he participated in the fourth edition of the ElectroPutere AIR 2020 residency program, organized by Club Electroputere, as part of the Re-altering Reality project (curated by Cătălin Gheorghe), Craiova. In 2017 he participated together with the writer Ovid Pop in the Artist-in-Residence residency program Q21 organized by MuseumsQuartier (Vienna, Austria), with a scholarship supported by tranzit.org.
His artistic practice combines dreams, past ‘marking’ experiences and futuristic fantasies in order to translate into a hybrid representation of multiple reality negotiated through emphatic acceptance. Through various mediums, he is interested in the overlap between cultural production and local space policies and its capacity to influence the urban public sphere or rural areas that are visited and revised over longer periods.
He is concerned with ways in which cultural design and branding affect daily life and can be used as constructive practices for human emancipation. Since 2010, he designed several books, posters, visual identities, websites, postcards, and other visual materials for art producers or ngo’s such as tranzit.ro/ Iași, unuplusunu, satelit, asociația producție în artă, uctrr, thefutureofmemory, FAVD*(MuralArt), etc.. His design work is usually created together with the various cultural workers involved in the projects.
